Tattoo Aftercare

Tattoo Aftercare is a crucial part of the tattooing process! Proper aftercare not only helps prevent infections, color fading, and scarring but also ensures your tattoo heals beautifully and stays vibrant for years to come.

Before Your Tattoo

  • Eat a full meal and stay hydrated before your appointment.
  • Avoid alcohol and get plenty of rest the night before.
  • Bring snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during the session.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Stay out of the sun—sunburned skin cannot be tattooed.
  • Avoid fake tanning.

After Your Tattoo

  • Avoid soaking your tattoo (no swimming) for at least 2 weeks.
  • Change all your bedding and towels to avoid bacteria exposure to your new tattoo.
  • Keep it out of the sun during the healing period. Once healed, always use sun protection.
  • Avoid intense workouts for 2 weeks to prevent irritation or infection.
  • Do not shave or use hair removal creams on the area until fully healed.
  • No fake tanning while healing.
  • Never scratch or peel your tattoo—tap gently if it itches. Scratching can damage the tattoo.
  • Wear loose clothing to avoid friction, especially in the first few days.
  • Avoid tight clothing or shoes if your tattoo is on an area prone to friction.
  • Once healed, moisturize regularly to keep your tattoo vibrant and at its best.

Aftercare Instructions

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
  • Remove cling wrap after 2 hours, or remove the second skin after 3-5 days.
  • Gently wash the tattoo with mild soap and lukewarm water. Pat it dry with a clean towel.
  • Make sure your tattoo is completely dry then apply a thin layer of aftercare cream to your tattoo. Only use a small amount, and allow it to breathe.
  • Apply aftercare cream 1-2 times daily (morning and night).
  • Itchiness is normal—tap gently instead of scratching. Scratching can damage the tattoo and hinder healing.

Aftercare Cream We Recommend:

  • Hustle Butter or Numbskulled
  • Dr. Pickle Antibacterial Tattoo Foam Wash

Using Second Skin

  • If your artist applies second skin to your tattoo, follow these specific guidelines:
  • If irritation occurs, remove it immediately.
  • Keep the second skin on for 3-5 days as advised by your artist.
  • The bandage will protect your tattoo, help prevent contamination, and reduce scabbing.
  • It’s normal for the bandage to trap fluids (ink, plasma, and blood). If you notice water under the bandage, remove it promptly to avoid infection.
  • To remove the second skin, gently peel it off in the shower, allowing the warm water to loosen the adhesive.
  • After removal, continue following the standard aftercare instructions.

Healing Time & Infection Awareness

The healing process for tattoos typically takes 1-3 weeks, depending on your skin type, the size and location of your tattoo, and the style of the design. Larger tattoos or more detailed designs may take longer to heal.

It’s essential to follow aftercare instructions closely to ensure proper healing and to minimize the risk of infection or complications.

Infections are rare, but if you notice redness, swelling, discharge, or severe pain, consult your healthcare provider immediately. Contact us if you have any concerns during the healing process.

Long-Term Care

  • Moisturize regularly even after healing to prevent dryness and fading.
  • Always use sunscreen on your tattoo, especially in the first few months after healing, to keep the colors bright and fresh.
  • Be aware of skin irritation, sun damage, or other factors that may affect the tattoo’s appearance over time.
